The European Parliament approved new driving licence rules aimed at improving road safety. The proposed changes include the introduction of mobile driving licences and mandatory health checks for issuing and renewing licences. Additionally, measures such as self-assessment of fitness to drive and increased awareness of pedestrians were also adopted. MEPs emphasized the importance of incorporating best practices from different Member States to promote better driving habits. Examples cited included Germany’s accompanying driving program and Spain’s health checks for licence renewal every 15 years. The legislation also includes a probationary period of at least two years for novice drivers and longer validity periods for licences. The draft rules were passed with 339 votes in favor, 240 against, and 37 abstentions. The new Parliament, to be elected in June, will further address and implement the approved changes. These reforms seek to enhance overall road safety standards and promote responsible driving practices across Europe.
