A recent poll conducted in five rural Tennessee Senate districts showed strong support for Governor Bill Lee’s proposal to provide state-funded grants to 20,000 students statewide to attend a private or homeschool of their choice. The majority of residents in these districts expressed interest in having more control over how their education tax dollars are spent and where their children are educated. Americans for Prosperity Tennessee commissioned the poll and is actively advocating for the statewide school choice program.
While the poll found that almost 71% of respondents believed the program should be available to all Tennessee tax-paying citizens, there was some criticism from opponents who argue that diverting money from public schools to private schools could pose a threat to public education funding and community schools. An opposing coalition, TN4ALL, criticized the poll questions as biased and not reflective of the priorities of families with school-aged children.
School choice supporters, on the other hand, argue that expanding state-funded vouchers would provide parents with more financial flexibility and options when choosing schools for their children. The Tennessee Education Association firmly opposes the ESA program expansion, stating that it would jeopardize public school funding and put neighborhood schools at risk of closure.
With the governor’s bill set for first hearings in the House and Senate, both supporters and opponents are gearing up for a debate on the future of education in Tennessee. Despite the strong Republican support for school choice, Democrats are already voicing their concerns about the potential devaluation of public education. The outcome of the debate remains to be seen as the conversation around education funding and school choice continues in the state.
