President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine called for increased support in the form of ammunition to repel Russian advances at a summit in Albania. The summit, attended by eleven southeastern European countries and officials from the European Union and other international organizations, aimed to build solidarity among Ukraine and Western Balkan nations.
During his visit to Tirana, Zelenskyy signed a friendship and cooperation agreement with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine against Russian aggression. Zelenskyy highlighted the need for continued support as Ukraine faces battlefield challenges, with over 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in action since Russia’s invasion.
Albania, a NATO member since 2009 and a candidate for EU membership, has provided military assistance and shelter to Ukrainian refugees. It has also joined international sanctions against Russian officials and institutions. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of vigilance against Russian aggression, calling for unity among neighboring countries and partners to prevent Putin from prevailing.
The summit in Albania comes amid signs of war fatigue as Ukraine continues to fight against Russian forces. Zelenskyy’s international tour, including a stop in Saudi Arabia to push for a peace plan and the return of prisoners of war, underscores the urgent need for support as Ukraine grapples with the ongoing conflict. The president’s plea for ammunition reflects the pressing need for resources to defend against Russian advances and protect Ukrainian sovereignty.
