Get to Know Fríði Djurhuus, Lead Singer of the Faroe Islands’ Premier Queer Vegan Punk Group

Joe & the Shitboys, a Faroese punk band, is gearing up for the release of their third album on March 1st. Frontman Fríði Djurhuus spoke with Euronews Culture about the band’s confrontational style and their impact on the small village mentality of the Faroe Islands. Despite their provocative lyrics and taunting of audience members, the band has gained traction both in the Faroes and internationally, winning Band of the Year at the Faroese Music Awards in 2020.

Djurhuus reflects on his upbringing in a remote village on Eysturoy, where he felt isolated and turned to music as a way to connect with others. His evolution from metal to punk was a natural progression that led to the formation of Joe & the Shitboys, a unique Queer Vegan Shitpunk band in the Faroe Islands. Djurhuus, who is openly bisexual, faces prejudice but uses his platform to challenge attitudes and promote acceptance.

The band’s music has resonated beyond just entertainment, inspiring fans to make lifestyle changes and feel accepted in a conservative society. One fan even credited the band for helping him stop self-harming. Despite facing backlash and resistance, Joe & the Shitboys continue to push boundaries and challenge societal norms through their music.

As they prepare to release their third album, Joe & the Shitboys are poised to continue their mission of creating a safe space for self-expression and promoting inclusivity in the Faroe Islands and beyond. Their confrontational style may ruffle feathers, but it is also sparking important conversations and changing lives for the better.
