Tennessee legislators advocate for cardiac arrest protocol

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – 18-year-old Linton Beck, a seemingly healthy high school student, had a cardiac arrest in class less than two years ago. His school nurse used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to save his life. Station Camp High School in Gallatin has five AEDs on campus. This incident has sparked lawmakers to introduce the ‘Smart Heart Act’, requiring coaches to go through CPR, AED, and first aid training. The bill also mandates that there must be an AED within three minutes on a school’s campus and establishes a cardiac emergency response plan. The American Heart Association (AHA) endorses the bill, stating it could be life-saving. Beck, now a senior, is one of the lucky 12% who survive a cardiac arrest. His story serves as a reminder that cardiac emergencies can happen to anyone, regardless of their apparent health. Rep. Scott Cepicky, who is sponsoring the bill, emphasizes the importance of quick action in such situations. The AHA Government Relations Director Sarah Adair highlights that not getting timely help during a cardiac arrest could be fatal. Thanks to the prompt action of the school nurse and availability of an AED, Beck survived his ordeal. The bill aims to increase preparedness in schools to prevent tragic incidents like Beck’s. Beck shares his story to raise awareness about the importance of being prepared for unexpected emergencies, even for seemingly healthy individuals.
