Ice skating shows have long been viewed as entertainment for children or Disney enthusiasts, but Holiday On Ice is aiming to change that perception with its latest show ‘Aurore (A New Day)’. Celebrating their 80th anniversary, the show is currently touring in France and is a modern twist on the classic ice show.
Directed by Francisco Negrin, known for his contemporary opera productions, ‘Aurore’ tells the story of a humanoid creature escaping a world devoid of emotion and love and discovering the beauty of humanity on Earth. The show features theatrical elements, acrobatics, technical figure skating, elaborate costumes, and a mix of dramatic, emotional, and campy tones.
Despite receiving mixed reviews at the Paris premiere, ‘Aurore’ is praised for its high-quality figure skating technique and impressive athleticism. Most of the performers come from competitive figure skating backgrounds, adding a level of technical skill to their performances.
The show is also a showcase of craftsmanship, with 350 handmade costumes, intricate wigs, and a complex set with pyrotechnics and a light installation. The logistical feat of touring with such a production includes 12 semi-trailers transporting equipment and two ice rinks that are assembled and disassembled in each venue.
With 80 staff members from 18 countries putting on the show each night, ‘Aurore (A New Day)’ offers a unique blend of figure skating, theatre, and artistry that aims to impress audiences of all ages. The show will continue touring in France until April 28th.
