21-year-old Linda from Daraa, Syria, risked her life on a flimsy boat on the Mediterranean Sea to save her sick mother from the war back home. After nearly two days adrift with no food or water, their boat was intercepted by the German search-and-rescue vessel Humanity 1. Linda, her mother, and 125 other refugees were saved.
Upon being rescued, Linda was emotional and grateful. She walked around the deck, crying, as she saw other survivors in need of food, clothing, and medical attention. She desperately asked to charge her phone to let her fiancé know she was safe, as he had not heard from her in 22 hours.
