Crossing the Mediterranean: A woman must be stronger than a lion

21-year-old Linda from Daraa, Syria, risked her life on a flimsy boat on the Mediterranean Sea to save her sick mother from the war back home. After nearly two days adrift with no food or water, their boat was intercepted by the German search-and-rescue vessel Humanity 1. Linda, her mother, and 125 other refugees were saved.

Upon being rescued, Linda was emotional and grateful. She walked around the deck, crying, as she saw other survivors in need of food, clothing, and medical attention. She desperately asked to charge her phone to let her fiancé know she was safe, as he had not heard from her in 22 hours.

The crew helped Linda and the other survivors, providing them with clothing and medical assistance. Linda’s relief at being rescued was palpable as she waited to send a message to her loved ones. The journey had been treacherous, but thanks to the Humanity 1, Linda and her mother were now safe.

The harrowing experience on the open sea highlights the dangers faced by refugees fleeing conflict and seeking safety in Europe. Linda’s story serves as a reminder of the courage and determination of those forced to make risky journeys in pursuit of a better life.
