29 people killed in Pakistan due to heavy rains causing house collapses and road blockages with landslides | Weather News

Heavy rains in Pakistan have caused at least 29 deaths and 50 injuries, with the majority of fatalities reported in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Landslides blocked roads and caused houses to collapse, leading to casualties and extensive damage in various areas. Emergency relief efforts are underway, with authorities using heavy machinery to clear debris and restore access to highways.

In addition to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, casualties were also reported in Balochistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The Karakoram Highway, an important link between Pakistan and China, remains blocked in some areas due to landslides. Tourists have been advised against travelling to the scenic north due to ongoing weather conditions.

Pakistan, despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions, is ranked among the 10 most vulnerable countries to climate change by the United Nations. The country is experiencing an unusual delay in winter rains this year, with severe weather events causing damage annually.

In 2022, climate-induced monsoon rains and flooding led to significant devastation in Pakistan, resulting in nearly 1,800 deaths and affecting millions of people. The economic damage was substantial, with billions of dollars lost, and many displaced individuals are still living in temporary shelters. The situation highlights the urgent need for climate resilience and adaptation measures in the country.
