Lawyer Tom Mars, representing Spyre Sports Group, defended the University of Tennessee and quarterback Nico Iamaleava in response to the NCAA’s investigation into UT’s use of name, image, and likeness benefits. Spyre Sports Group has signed over 200 Tennessee athletes to NIL deals, including Iamaleava, who signed a lucrative deal with the collective. Mars stated that Iamaleava’s NIL deal was independent of Tennessee and not an inducement for him to attend UT.
The agreement between Iamaleava and Spyre Sports Group was mutually beneficial and involved a limited assignment of his NIL rights, governed by California law. The deal was in line with existing NCAA NIL guidelines and was not related to recruiting Iamaleava to UT. UT Chancellor Donde Plowman criticized the NCAA in an email to President Charlie Baker, calling their actions morally wrong for pursuing allegations related to NIL that could lead to a lack of institutional control charge for the university.
The NCAA met with UT compliance staff members to discuss the allegations, but the school has not yet received a notice of allegations. Plowman’s email indicated that UT could face multiple Level I and Level II violations across various sports, including football. The investigation is ongoing, and the university is awaiting further developments from the NCAA.
