Sweden has officially joined the NATO military alliance after facing delays from Turkey and Hungary since applying to join in May 2022. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized unity and solidarity as guiding principles for Sweden as a NATO member. Fears of a Russian military threat prompted Sweden and Finland to apply for NATO membership after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sweden’s lack of military preparedness was highlighted in 2013 when Russian bomber planes flew close to Swedish airspace, leading to the need for NATO support. Sweden’s accession to NATO marks a shift away from its longstanding policy of neutrality and a commitment to collective defense.
Despite Sweden’s historical avoidance of military alliances, it has drawn closer to NATO over the past two decades. The decision to join NATO comes after a shift in government policy, with Sweden now having a significant role in the alliance’s defense capabilities, including submarines and fighter jets. Russia has criticized Sweden’s move, threatening political and military counter-measures in response.
With membership in NATO, Sweden aims to contribute to the alliance’s values of freedom, democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law.
