A report to the Human Rights Council highlighted numerous violations and crimes under international law committed during protests in Iran sparked by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini, including killings, torture, rape, and gender persecution. The report called on the government to halt the repression of peaceful protesters, particularly women and girls.
The protests in Iran were triggered by Ms. Amini’s death at the hands of the morality police due to her non-observance of mandatory hijab laws. The mission found that her death was unlawful and the government denied justice for her. Security forces in Iran were said to have used unnecessary and disproportionate force, leading to the deaths and injuries of many protesters.
In Haiti, the UN remains deeply concerned about the deteriorating security situation due to gang violence and clashes with the police in Port-au-Prince. The UN Secretary-General called for immediate steps to advance the political process and financial support for the Multinational Security Support mission to address insecurity.
In another development, a UN torture expert called on States to review prison management practices to ensure compliance with human rights standards. The expert highlighted challenges in prison management, including overcrowding, lack of resources, and inadequate staffing, resulting in unsafe and inhumane conditions for prisoners. The neglect of prisons leads to social impacts and ultimately fails to keep the public safe. The report emphasized the need for strategic planning to address emerging challenges in prison management, such as climate change and future health pandemics.
