President Joe Biden made several claims during his State of the Union address that are being fact-checked for accuracy. One of the statements made by Biden was about 55 of the largest corporations in the US making $40 billion in profit and not paying any federal corporate income taxes in 2020. While Biden claimed that his new law would make these companies pay a minimum of 15% in taxes, experts say this doesn’t guarantee all of them will. Only 14 of the 55 non-paying companies reported income of at least $1 billion in the US.
Another statement that Biden made during his address was about more than 1 million American lives being lost to Covid-19 under the Trump administration. While it is true that many lives were lost during Trump’s presidency, the US didn’t reach its millionth death until May 2022 when Biden was already in office. As of February, over 1.18 million people in the US have died from Covid-19 according to the CDC.
While Biden’s claims are being closely scrutinized, experts point out that his 15% corporate minimum tax may not completely eliminate zero-tax profitable corporations. Biden’s statements regarding Covid-19 deaths during the Trump administration also require context and clarification. As the fact-checking continues, it is important to provide accurate information to the public about the policies and decisions being discussed during the State of the Union address.
