This year, the average duration of a Best Picture nominee is 138 minutes, with the longest film being Killers of the Flower Moon at 206 minutes. The first Christmas movie nominated since 1948, The Holdovers, is in the running for Best Picture. Director Greta Gerwig makes history as the first director to have her first three films nominated in the Best Picture category.
French director Justine Triet becomes the ninth female nominee for Best Director. The Best Picture line-up includes three films directed by women, marking a historic first in Oscars history. Four out of the 10 screenplay nominees were written by women, representing the most female writers in a single year. Actors Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown set a milestone as the first Black lead actor and supporting actor to be nominated for the same film. Lily Gladstone becomes the first Native American woman nominated for Best Actress. The nominations also feature two out queer actors in the same year.
In other records, Martin Scorsese becomes the oldest person ever nominated for Best Director, while Robert De Niro sets a new record for the longest time between Oscar nominations. Composer John Williams earns his 54th nomination. Billie Eilish and Finneas could become the youngest two-time Oscar winners. Thelma Schoonmaker gets her ninth nomination for film editing. International feature films being nominated in both Best Picture and Best International Feature is becoming more common.
