Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party, has been elected as Pakistan’s 14th President for a second term. He won against his rival Mahmood Khan Achakzai in the National Assembly and Senate elections, receiving 255 votes compared to Achakzai’s 119. Zardari was the joint candidate of the PPP and PML-N parties. The new president was chosen by the electoral college of newly elected members of the National Assembly and provincial assemblies. Zardari, the husband of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, previously served as president from 2008 to 2013. He will be the first civilian to be elected for a second term as president. Zardari is expected to be sworn in soon, replacing Dr. Arif Alvi. His opponent, Achakzai, heads the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party and was backed by the Sunni Ittehad Council. The election results indicate Zardari’s widespread support in the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies, while Achakzai fared better in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly. Zardari’s victory symbolizes a significant moment in Pakistani politics, showcasing his return to power and influence in the country.
