Houthis in Yemen attack Singapore-flagged vessel in Gulf of Aden

Yemen’s Houthi rebels recently launched an unsuccessful missile attack on a Singapore-flagged commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden, causing explosions but ultimately not impacting the vessel. This latest attack is part of a series of assaults by the Iranian-backed group as tensions in the region escalate.

The targeted ship, Propel Fortune, continued on its route without any reported injuries or damages. The US military stated that the missiles did not hit the vessel. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, also stating that they launched 37 drones targeting American warships.

In response, the US Navy, along with allied warships and aircraft, shot down 15 bomb-carrying Houthi drones in the area. This recent attack follows a previous incident where a Houthi missile struck a commercial ship, resulting in the deaths of three crew members.

The Houthis have been conducting these attacks to pressure Israel to stop its war in Gaza, although their targets are increasingly unrelated to the conflict. Recent actions include the sinking of a cargo ship and the downing of an American drone.

The Houthis have been in control of northern Yemen and the capital city of Sanaa since 2014, engaging in a civil war against a Saudi-led coalition since 2015. Since the US began its airstrike campaign in January, there have been reports of casualties among Houthi fighters and civilians. The situation continues to be tense in the region as both sides engage in conflict.
