Report alleges Harvard’s chief diversity officer Sherri Ann Charleston of committing plagiarism

Harvard University’s chief diversity and inclusion officer, Sherri Ann Charleston, is facing numerous allegations of plagiarism dating back to 2009, including claims that she failed to properly cite her own husband’s study. The anonymous complaint lists at least 40 examples of alleged plagiarism, with Charleston accused of not attributing other scholars’ work in her 2009 dissertation and reportedly taking credit for her husband’s study in a peer-reviewed article they co-authored in 2014. The fresh allegations come just weeks after Harvard University president Claudine Gay resigned amidst plagiarism accusations and mishandling of antisemitism on campus.

Charleston, who joined Harvard in 2020, has not yet responded to the allegations, and Harvard has not confirmed whether they are investigating the claims. The complaint was also filed with the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where Charleston previously held a similar diversity and inclusion role. These allegations are part of a string of academic misconduct cases involving Harvard-affiliated researchers, including Gay’s own plagiarism accusations and a probe into data falsification by researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Experts warn that republishing old work as new without proper attribution is not just plagiarism, but fraud. The scrutiny on academic integrity at Harvard continues to grow as more cases of plagiarism and research misconduct come to light, raising questions about the university’s handling of such issues.
