Sweden recommences funding for UN agency assisting Palestinians | Latest updates on Israel-Gaza conflict

Sweden has announced that it will resume aid to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) with an initial disbursement of $20 million. This decision comes after the agency faced a funding crisis when major donors, including the United States, cut their funding over accusations of ties to terrorism. Sweden had suspended aid following allegations that some UNRWA employees were involved in a Hamas-led attack.

In order to receive the aid, the UNRWA has agreed to allow for additional checks on its spending and personnel, including independent audits and enhanced internal supervision. This move follows similar actions by the European Commission and Canada to release funding to the agency.

The UNRWA plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian relief in Gaza, where a significant portion of the population is facing famine. Access to humanitarian aid has been severely restricted by Israel, leading to criticism of costly and ineffective measures such as airdropping supplies into the enclave.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with reports of children dying from starvation and dehydration. The UNRWA has been unable to deliver supplies to the north of the Strip since January. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to thousands of deaths and injuries on both sides.

Sweden’s decision to resume aid to the UNRWA will provide much-needed support to the agency as it continues its humanitarian efforts in Gaza. The international community must continue to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict to prevent further suffering and loss of life.
