Former President Donald Trump has once again secured victory in the Tennessee Republican presidential primary, marking his third consecutive win in the state. With nearly 95% of the ballots counted, Trump received 447,235 votes in the 2024 election, an increase of almost 63,000 votes compared to 2020 when he ran unopposed. This year’s vote total is also a significant jump from the 2016 primary, where he received around 114,000 fewer votes in a competitive race.
Despite lower turnout in the Republican primary this year compared to the peak in 2016, Trump’s increasing success in Tennessee confirms the state as “Trump country.” The turnout of approximately 580,000 voters aligns with historical totals for competitive Republican primaries in previous years, with 2008 and 2012 primaries having similar participation levels.
On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden ran unopposed in Tennessee, with the only other option being to vote ‘uncommitted.’ While this choice gained attention in other states during Super Tuesday, around 7.9% of Democratic voters in Tennessee opted for ‘uncommitted,’ with Nashville and Knoxville having higher percentages of such voters. The turnout of uncommitted voters in Memphis, another Democratic stronghold, was around 5.1%.
Overall, Trump’s continued success in Tennessee’s Republican primary, combined with the turnout of uncommitted Democratic voters, highlights the political landscape in the state as both parties gear up for the 2024 presidential election.
