Visa issues resolved, Chess tournament to proceed in Canada | World News

The highly anticipated FIDE Candidates Tournament, set to take place in Toronto next month, has been confirmed to remain in the Canadian city after concerns about players and participants receiving their visas on time were resolved. Scheduled from April 3 to 23, the tournament is considered one of the most prestigious in the chess world and will determine challengers for the World Champion title in both the Open and Women’s categories.

Featuring five Indian players, including teen Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa R, the tournament faced the possibility of being moved to Spain if visa issues were not resolved by a certain deadline. However, the President of the Chess Federation of Canada, Vladimir Drkulec, confirmed that all players and most of their accompanying persons have obtained their visas, ensuring the tournament will proceed as planned in Toronto.

FIDE expressed gratitude to Canadian authorities, Minister of Immigration Marc Miller, MPs, the Canadian Chess Federation, media, and the global chess community for their support in resolving the visa issues. This marks the first time the nearly 70-year-old tournament will be held in North America and will showcase 16 of the world’s top players.

The tournament promises to be a thrilling event for chess enthusiasts worldwide, with hopes that all participants will receive their visas in time for the competition. Stay updated on the latest chess news and developments by following the Hindustan Times for more updates.
