Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s efforts to end protests by Polish farmers against Ukrainian agricultural imports have so far been unsuccessful. A recent meeting between Tusk and farmer representatives in Warsaw resulted in no agreement being reached. The farmers have been protesting since November 2023, demanding that Poland reject the EU’s Green Deal and limit Ukrainian agricultural imports that they say are harming their businesses with unfair competition. Trucks trying to enter Ukraine from Poland are facing long queues due to the protests, with some waiting up to 24 days. The farmers are only allowing a limited number of trucks to pass through, while still allowing the transportation of humanitarian and military aid. If their demands are not met, the farmers have warned that their protests may intensify, particularly on the border with Ukraine. The Prime Minister presented proposals to address some of the farmers’ concerns during the recent meeting, but no resolution was reached. The ongoing protests by Polish farmers highlight the challenges faced by the agricultural sector in the country and the complexities of balancing trade interests with domestic concerns.
