Portugal’s General Elections Proceeding as Populist Support Grows: Voting Begins | Latest Updates on Elections

Voters in Portugal are heading to the polls in a snap parliamentary election, with the center-left and center-right parties vying for power amidst the rise of the far-right Chega party. The election is taking place amid a housing crisis, low wages, healthcare issues, and corruption allegations against the mainstream parties. The far-right party is looking to capitalize on these allegations and its anti-immigration agenda to gain support.

The ruling Socialist Party, now led by Pedro Nuno Santos, could potentially form alliances with left-wing parties to govern, while the center-right Democratic Alliance is leading in most opinion polls. However, they may struggle to govern without the support of Chega, which has doubled in support since the last election in 2022.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has expressed concern about Chega gaining power and has vowed to prevent it. Political scientist Antonio Costa Pinto notes that Portugal is experiencing a trend seen in other European democracies, with far-right parties challenging the traditional center-right.

A potential government led by the Democratic Alliance, supported by Chega, would likely be fragile and vulnerable to the far-right party’s influence. On the other hand, a Socialist Party victory with a right-wing majority could create instability. As the election results are awaited, the country is on the brink of a political shift that mirrors those seen across Europe.
