Tennessee Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Recognize Victims of Communism in Schools
In a new bill filed in the Tennessee general assembly, Senator Frank Niceley is pushing for all schools in the state to honor victims of communist regimes worldwide. The bill would require all local education agencies and public charter schools to observe Victims of Communism Day on Nov. 7 each year. Additionally, these schools would need to provide at least 45 minutes of instruction on this day in a world history and geography course.
The bill references historical figures such as Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Mao Zedong, and Pol Pot, attributing their actions to the teachings of communism which have resulted in the deaths of millions and untold atrocities. The proposed topics for instruction on Victims of Communism Day include Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution, Joseph Stalin and the Soviet System, Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, as well as Nicolas Maduro and the Chavismo movement.
If passed, the law would take effect on July 1 and become a requirement for all high school students starting in the 2024-2025 school year. The bill is carried in the House of Representatives by Rep. Dennis Powers and is set to be heard by the House K-12 Education Subcommittee in the coming weeks.
This bill aims to educate students about the dangers and atrocities of communism throughout history and ensure that the victims of these regimes are not forgotten.
