Unraveling the Nigeria Kidnappings: Uncovering the Culprits and Their Motives | Global News

Kidnapping in Nigeria has become a serious security threat, with over 3,600 people abducted in the country between July 2022 and July 2023. The kidnappers demanded ransom totaling at least 5 billion naira during this time period, but only a fraction of that amount was paid due to the struggling economy and high unemployment rates. Various groups are involved in the kidnapping business in Nigeria, including violent criminals, armed gangs, and Islamic militants like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The kidnappings are often driven by economic desperation, with ransom being the most common demand. Kidnappers have also asked for foodstuffs, motorcycles, and even petrol in exchange for the release of those abducted. Some of the kidnappings have a political motivation, such as signaling strength to the government or instilling fear in the population.

Kidnappers target a range of individuals, including vulnerable groups like women collecting firewood, school children, and villagers in remote regions. High-value individuals like government officials, family members of politicians, wealthy individuals, and even Catholic priests are also frequently targeted. The abduction of 21 priests from July 2022 to June 2023 highlights the perceived value of targeting clergy members for ransom. The situation is exacerbated by Nigeria’s struggling economy and high unemployment rates, leading to a worsening security situation in the country.
