A suspected gas explosion in China’s Yanjiao caused significant damage to buildings and vehicles on Wednesday morning, according to reports from state media. The explosion occurred at a restaurant on the ground floor of an old residential complex in Hebei province. While the number of casualties was unclear, injured individuals were taken to the hospital. Videos from the scene showed blue smoke, damaged vehicles, and debris scattered around. Local authorities have launched an investigation and are conducting rescue operations.
In unrelated incidents, two coal mine accidents in China have resulted in the deaths of 12 people within a 24-hour period. One incident involved the collapse of an underground coal bunker in Shanxi province, killing five and leaving two missing. This comes after the government recently revised mining safety legislation in response to a surge in accidents in 2023. China’s top coal-producing region has seen an increase in deaths, prompting the need for stricter safety measures. The country’s mine safety administration has revamped laws to address existing issues.
The incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring safety in both the industrial and residential sectors in China. Authorities are working to address these issues and prevent further tragedies.
