The Cheatham County School Board unanimously voted to keep tuition rates for out-of-county students at $0 during their regular monthly meeting on March 7. Currently, there are 338 out-of-county students enrolled in Cheatham County Schools. Most of these students come from neighboring counties such as Davidson, Dickson, Montgomery, and Robertson. The district offers both open enrollment for Cheatham County students wanting to attend a different school, and out-of-county enrollment for students from other counties. Open enrollment begins April 15 and ends May 17.
The district receives funding per student regardless of residency, with a base rate of $7,000 per student for the 2024-25 school year. In addition to discussing tuition rates, the school board also passed a resolution opposing the Education Freedom Scholarship Act, which was proposed by Governor Lee in November. The act would allow students to use taxpayer funds to attend a school of their choice. The Cheatham County Commission will further discuss this matter on March 11.
When asked about the possibility of charging tuition for out-of-county students if the EFSA passes, the district’s Communications Director stated that they review tuition rates annually. The school board meets on the first Thursday of each month to discuss important matters affecting Cheatham County Schools.
