Vaughan Gething becomes Wales’ first minister

Vaughan Gething made history on Wednesday by being elected as the first black leader of a government in the UK, as he became the first minister of Wales. Gething, who is of Welsh and Zambian descent, won the leadership in the Welsh parliament with 27 out of 51 votes, just days after becoming the leader of Wales’ governing Labour Party. He is set to be sworn in pending approval from King Charles III.

Gething’s election marks a significant moment for Wales, as he becomes the first Black person to lead a nation in Europe. He expressed both pride and a sense of responsibility in his new role. As the former health minister during the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economy minister, Gething faced challenges such as the closure of blast furnaces at Tata Steel and protests over environmental rules by farmers.

Notably, Gething joins U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf as nonwhite leaders of governments in the U.K. This diversity in leadership comes at a time when issues of race, environment, and economy are at the forefront of public debate.

Despite facing scrutiny over campaign donations, Gething remains focused on his responsibilities and the future of Wales under his leadership. His election represents a turning point in Welsh politics and underscores the country’s commitment to diversity and progress.
