Legal expert warns AI could have unintended consequences for TN bill aimed at protecting musicians

The ELVIS Act, also known as House Bill 2019, is aimed at protecting musicians’ voices from being misused by artificial intelligence. Although it has received bipartisan support and passed a House committee, there are concerns about its potential negative consequences.

Internet legal expert Carl Szabo has raised issues with the bill, stating that it is overly broad and could have unintended implications for people in Tennessee. He specifically pointed out that the bill does not clearly define artificial intelligence and could potentially make it illegal to post photos of musical artists online, among other things.

Szabo has urged for the bill to be fine-tuned to include provisions that specifically ban AI-produced content for commercial use. Without these changes, there is a risk of causing significant problems for individuals across the state.

Despite these concerns, one of the bill’s sponsors, House Majority Leader William Lamberth, has indicated that they are taking a cautious approach to ensure that any unintended consequences are addressed before moving forward with the legislation.

Overall, while the ELVIS Act is intended to protect artists’ voices, there is a need for further refinement to prevent potential issues that could arise from its current broad language. The bill is set to be discussed in the future by the Calendar & Rules Committee.
