Sponsor of TN ‘abortion trafficking’ bill claims inaccuracies in ad targeting

A recent video advertisement released by the Campaign for Democracy, a political action committee affiliated with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, has inaccurately depicted a Tennessee bill that would make it illegal for an adult to help a minor obtain an abortion without parental consent. The 30-second ad shows a young victim of sexual assault handcuffed to a hospital bed, insinuating that the bill would criminalize young women seeking reproductive care. However, the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jason Zachary, has clarified that the legislation aims to protect parental rights by ensuring that adults cannot help minors obtain abortions without consent.

Zachary emphasized that the bill does not penalize pregnant minors seeking healthcare but instead targets adults facilitating abortions for minors without parental involvement. Despite criticism from Democrats who argue that the bill could harm abused children, Zachary maintains that parental consent is essential in medical decision-making for minors.

The bill has advanced through several committees and subcommittees but has yet to be scheduled for further discussion. Newsom has faced backlash for his deceptive portrayal of the bill in the advertisement, prompting a response from Zachary defending the legislation as a necessary safeguard for parental rights in Tennessee. Despite differing opinions, the debate over the bill highlights a contentious issue regarding abortion access for minors and the role of parental consent in reproductive healthcare decisions.
