Controversial speaker and conservative figure Kyle Rittenhouse made an appearance at the University of Memphis, sparking protests from students before, during, and after his event. Campus police and Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers provided increased security for his visit. Rittenhouse’s speech was cut short as students drowned him out, expressing their displeasure with his presence on campus. Despite the sold-out event, less than half of the UC Theater was filled, with only about 50 to 60 people in attendance. Rittenhouse skipped his speech and went straight to a Q&A session where students questioned him about his trial and reasons for coming to Memphis. Feeling pressured by the student backlash, Rittenhouse abruptly left the stage after being asked about Turning Point USA’s CEO. Turning Point USA organizers were later escorted off campus. Rittenhouse is scheduled to speak at Western Kentucky University next. Students at the University of Memphis emphasized the importance of speaking out and sharing peaceful narratives amidst the controversy. The event highlighted the ongoing tensions and divisions on college campuses surrounding conservative speakers and free speech.
