Luke Bryan commends new Tennessee AI legislation safeguarding musicians: ‘Setting an incredible example’

Luke Bryan, a popular country music artist, recently celebrated the signing of a new legislation in Nashville, Tennessee, aimed at protecting musicians from unauthorized use of their voices and likenesses through artificial intelligence. Named the Ensuring Likeness, Voice, and Image Security Act, or “ELVIS Act,” the bill adds vocal likeness to the existing property rights for name, photographs, and likeness in the state.

The bipartisan bill received unanimous support in the state General Assembly and creates a new civil action to hold individuals accountable for using someone’s voice without permission or producing artificial content using their name, photographs, voice, or likeness. This legislation is a significant step towards safeguarding artists’ rights in the age of AI.

The passing of the ELVIS Act was hailed by Governor Bill Lee, who emphasized the importance of protecting Tennessee’s rich artistic heritage as technology evolves. The bill was also praised by SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director for addressing the misappropriation of voice and likeness by artificial intelligence.

Similar AI-related legislation is being discussed at the federal level, with musician Lainey Wilson testifying about her experience as a victim of AI-generated content before a House Judiciary subcommittee. Wilson highlighted the personal violation artists feel when their voices and likenesses are used without consent and called for responsible use of AI in various industries.

Overall, the ELVIS Act in Tennessee sets a precedent for protecting artists’ rights and serves as a model for other states and policymakers to address the growing concerns surrounding AI technologies.
