Two squatters are being sought by New York City police in connection to the murder of 52-year-old Nadia Vitel, whose body was found stuffed in a duffel bag inside her new apartment last week. The Russian native was pronounced dead at the scene with the cause of death determined to be blunt-force trauma, sparking an investigation into her death as a homicide.
According to reports, Vitel came home and walked in on the squatters who had taken over her apartment. Concerned relatives requested a welfare check after not hearing from her for 48 hours, leading her son to discover her body in a duffel bag hidden in her closet.
The suspects were captured on surveillance video fleeing the scene and driving off in Vitel’s Lexus SUV before crashing in Pennsylvania. Despite the crash, Pennsylvania police did not immediately connect the vehicle to the homicide case, delaying the alert to NYPD. The suspects attempted to purchase a vehicle for $1,000 at local dealerships after the crash. Police have described them as a man and woman in their 20s.
Vitel, who had a successful career in marketing for various companies and had ties to tennis star Maria Sharapova’s candy line, was remembered by her son at her funeral. The investigation into her tragic death continues, with police actively searching for the two suspects.
