Senate Passes Bill Granting Anti-LGBTQ Parents the Right to Foster and Adopt in Tennessee • Tennessee Lookout

The Tennessee Senate recently approved a controversial bill known as the Tennessee Foster and Adoptive Parent Protection Act. This bill would allow LGBTQ youth to be placed in families who have moral or religious objections to their sexual orientation or gender identity. While the bill would not exclude parents with anti-LGBTQ beliefs, it also does not require the Department of Children’s Services to consider the child’s feelings before placing them in a family’s home.

Critics of the bill, including Democratic Senator Raumesh Akbari, believe that it is cruel and could potentially harm children in foster care. The Human Rights Campaign also spoke out against the proposal, stating that it violates federal law and does not prioritize the best interests of the child.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mary Littleton, aims to expand the pool of foster parents by allowing those with anti-LGBTQ beliefs to participate in the program. Proponents argue that the bill ensures children are placed with the most suitable parents, regardless of their beliefs.

In addition, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti has led a multi-state coalition opposing federal rules that protect LGBTQ youth in foster care, further highlighting the controversial nature of the bill. The legislation will now head to the House for approval before potentially becoming law under Governor Bill Lee’s administration.
