Amazon has announced that it is replacing its “Just Walk Out” technology in its Amazon Fresh stores with smart carts. The decision is based on customer feedback and a desire to provide a better shopping experience. The smart carts will allow customers to scan items as they shop, see what they’re paying, and view deals and savings on a screen.
This change will affect over 40 Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., with the majority transitioning to the new technology. However, the “Just Walk Out” technology will continue to be offered at Amazon Go stores and in third-party locations such as airports, college stores, and cafes.
The Amazon Dash Cart, the new smart shopping cart, uses a combination of computer vision and sensor fusion to identify items placed in the cart. Customers can begin browsing by scanning a QR code on the Amazon app and can check out by going through a designated Dash Cart lane without the need to visit a register.
Despite the shift in technology, customers still have the option to check out with a cashier or use self-checkout lanes. Overall, Amazon aims to provide a more convenient and efficient shopping experience for its customers by introducing these new smart carts in its Amazon Fresh stores.
