Chattanooga has recently appointed Deandra Schirmer as the new women’s basketball coach. Schirmer comes from Valdosta State, where she led the team to four consecutive Division II NCAA tournament appearances and two Gulf South Conference championships in five seasons. Her successful coaching tenure at Valdosta State included a 30-3 record last season, with a school-record 27-game win streak that earned her the Gulf South coach of the year award.
Schirmer’s hiring comes after the departure of Shawn Poppie, who led the Mocs to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances and was recently hired by Clemson. Chattanooga’s athletic director, Mark Wharton, expressed excitement about Schirmer’s appointment, stating that she was the right person to lead the team forward and aligns with the university’s values.
During her time at Valdosta State, Schirmer amassed a 114-31 record, with an impressive 86-19 mark in Gulf South Conference games. Despite facing tough competition in the conference, she managed to lead the Lady Blazers to success consistently.
Schirmer’s track record of success and her ability to develop a competitive program make her a promising addition to the Chattanooga women’s basketball team. Fans can look forward to seeing the team’s progress under her leadership in the upcoming seasons.
