Football superstar Lionel Messi has joined forces with environmental foundation Join the Planet to combat climate change. The Argentine athlete announced his collaboration with the organization to help “take care of the planet” and extend his influence beyond the football field.
Messi’s first initiative with Join the Planet involves cleaning up the Paraná River in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina. The foundation aims to collect thousands of tons of plastics from coasts around the world, turning them into a custom sculpture of Messi’s iconic left boot.
The cleat, crafted with recycled materials from various countries, incorporates recycled nylon plastic from fishing nets, recycled polypropylene plastic from ropes and bottle caps, and recycled fiberglass for durability. Produced in partnership with sustainable brand Karün, the collectible sculpture represents a first-of-its-kind initiative.
Inspired by a 16-year-old activist, Messi is determined to make a positive impact on the environment through his involvement with Join the Planet. The organization repurposes discarded materials into valuable products to fund initiatives worldwide that protect and regenerate natural ecosystems in collaboration with local communities.
