Warner Bros. announced that a new “Matrix” film is in the works, with Drew Goddard set to write and direct. This will be the first film in the franchise not directed by the Wachowskis, although Lana Wachowski will serve as an executive producer. Plot details are being kept under wraps, and it is unclear if Keanu Reeves or other original cast members will return. Goddard expressed his admiration for the original movies and said he is grateful for the opportunity to tell stories in the world created by the Wachowskis.
The original “Matrix” trilogy, directed by the Wachowskis, followed Neo as he discovers he is living in a simulation created by machines. The series returned in 2021 with “The Matrix Resurrections,” which was a box office disappointment but received mixed reviews. It is uncertain if the new film will directly follow the plot of “Resurrections.”
Goddard, known for directing “The Cabin in the Woods” and “Bad Times at the El Royale,” has also worked on projects like “Cloverfield,” “The Martian,” and the show “Daredevil.” Warner Bros. expressed excitement for Goddard to bring his vision to the cinematic canon that the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building.
