The FBI and New York City investigators raided the FDNY’s Brooklyn headquarters and the homes of fire chiefs Anthony Saccavino and Brian Cordasco in connection with a corruption probe. The investigation is looking into whether the chiefs were paid to expedite safety inspections. While neither man has been formally accused of any wrongdoing, they have been placed on modified duty. The FDNY has been cooperating with the investigation and is waiting for guidance from the Department of Investigation on further action.
These raids follow a broader probe into Mayor Eric Adams’ 2021 campaign, including allegations of fast-tracking fire system approvals for major developers, reportedly including the government of Turkey. Adams denied the existence of an internal list used to speed up approvals, but the FBI is investigating a call he made to the former Fire Commissioner to assist in getting approval for a new Turkish consulate building. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York is leading the investigation into the mayor’s campaign.
The FDNY spokesperson stated that Commissioner Laura Kavanagh was alerted to the allegations last year and acted promptly, prioritizing the safety of New Yorkers. City Hall became aware of the raid when notified by the FDNY that morning, with no direct connection to anyone at City Hall reported. The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office have not provided comment on the raid at this time. The investigation is ongoing, with details slowly emerging as the situation unfolds.
