Climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained twice by police at a demonstration in the Netherlands organized to protest against fossil fuel subsidies. The protest, led by the Extinction Rebellion environmental group, included more than 400 people being arrested, with Thunberg being among the detainees. The activists were marching from The Hague’s city centre to the A12 highway to pressure the Dutch government ahead of a debate on fossil fuel subsidies in June. Thunberg emphasized the urgency of the climate crisis, stating that action must be taken to prevent further damage to the planet. Despite the arrests, the activists remained determined to continue their fight against fossil fuel subsidies. Previous protests on the A12 highway have also taken place to demand an end to subsidies for fossil fuels. Thunberg remained focused on her cause, stating that her arrest was not the issue, but rather the urgency of addressing the climate crisis. The protesters, carrying XR flags and chanting slogans, were met with a strong police presence, resulting in a standoff between the two groups. Thunberg’s detention drew attention to the ongoing activism and determination of climate activists in the fight against fossil fuel subsidies.
