As the war between Ukraine and Russia continues on its 772nd day, the situation on Saturday, April 6, 2024, remains tense. The Ukrainian military launched drones at a Russian airbase, claiming to have destroyed six warplanes and killed or injured 20 members of the Russian military. Russia, however, said its air defences downed 53 Ukrainian drones targeting the Rostov region. In a separate incident, a Russian drone strike on Kharkiv resulted in six deaths and 11 injuries. Pro-Russian separatists in Moldova reported an explosive drone hitting a military base near the Ukrainian border.
On the diplomatic front, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned China of consequences if it supports Russia. The Kremlin refuted French President Macron’s claim of Russian sabotage of the Paris Olympics. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron will seek US approval for a $60bn aid package for Ukraine. Japan is adding 164 new industrial products to its export ban list to Russia.
In terms of weapons, Lithuania has pledged two million euros to buy 3,000 drones for Ukraine. Additionally, Russia’s Investigative Committee claimed that a suspect in a recent attack near Moscow had pro-Ukraine data on their phone.
The conflict shows no signs of abating as both sides continue to exchange fire and engage in diplomatic maneuvers to gain an advantage. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and taking steps to support Ukraine and limit Russia’s actions.
