Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned Ecuador for violating international agreements by raiding its embassy in Quito, Ecuador, to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas. The video of the raid shows Ecuadorian police storming the embassy, causing violence and mistreating Mexican personnel. The incident has led to a rupture in diplomatic relations between the two countries, with Mexico recalling its staff from Quito. Mexico has threatened to take Ecuador to international courts over the incident.
The tensions between Ecuador and Mexico escalated due to comments made by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Ecuador’s recent presidential elections and his offer of political asylum to Glas, who was convicted on corruption charges linked to the Odebrecht scandal. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations protects embassies and consulates from police interference, but Ecuador disregarded these principles in its actions.
The international community, including the United States and the Organisation of American States, has condemned Ecuador for violating diplomatic norms. The OAS is scheduled to discuss the embassy raid in a meeting in Washington, DC. Despite Ecuador’s president defending his country’s actions, Mexico has expressed frustration with the lack of support and clear stance from the US and Canada.
Glas has since returned to prison in Guayaquil after being arrested during the embassy raid. The incident has highlighted the importance of diplomatic immunity and the need for countries to respect international agreements to maintain peaceful relations. Mexico’s strong stance and threat of legal action signal its commitment to upholding its sovereignty and protecting its diplomats abroad.
