Despite TN Republican’s defense, Tennessee moves to ban first-cousin marriages

The Tennessee General Assembly has passed a bill banning marriage between ‘lineal descendants of a grandparent,’ which includes first cousins. The bill received unanimous support in the Senate and most Republicans in the House, despite a few voting ‘present’ or ‘no.’ The reasoning behind the ban is the increased risk of birth defects associated with first cousin marriages. An amendment proposed by Rep. Gino Bulso to allow cousin marriage with genetic counseling was rejected. Bulso argued that banning first-cousin marriages would violate the Supreme Court case Obergefell v Hodges, which legalized gay marriage. Democrats were surprised by Bulso’s argument in favor of his amendment. However, Bulso’s stance was seen as ironic, as his own grandparents were first cousins who had to come to Tennessee to get married. The bill also aims to outlaw LGBTQ+ marriages between first cousins, leading to accusations of hypocrisy from House Republican leaders. The bill reflects a shift in attitudes towards cousin marriage in the state, which has been legal in Tennessee. The new legislation is expected to bring Tennessee in line with most other states where cousin marriage is prohibited.
