Former Long Island teacher charged with sexually abusing third-grade students in Bay Shore – NBC New York

Retired Long Island Elementary School Teacher Arrested on Child Sexual Abuse Charges

Thomas Berngozzi, a retired Long Island elementary school teacher, was arrested after being accused of sexually abusing students dating back to the 1980s. The 75-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually abusing third-graders he taught at two Bay Shore elementary schools. Prosecutors allege that Berngozzi subjected scores of students to abuse both at school and away from school property.

The Suffolk County District Attorney, Ray Tierney, described the breadth of the abuse as astounding and urged other potential victims to come forward. 45 former students have already filed civil complaints against their former teacher. The criminal charges announced on Thursday focus on allegations from two students in particular, but prosecutors are seeking others to come forward.

An attorney representing the alleged victims expressed relief over Berngozzi’s arrest but also aims to hold Bay Shore school officials accountable for not stopping the abuse. The attorney stated that there were complaints against Berngozzi dating back decades, yet no action was taken to prevent the abuse.

Bay Shore schools have not responded to requests for comment, but the superintendent released a statement saying Bernagozzi hasn’t been affiliated with the district since 2000. Bernagozzi’s attorney maintains his client vehemently denies the allegations.

The former teacher is due back in court in January as investigations continue into the extent of the abuse. The victims and their legal representative hope that the arrest and prosecution will provide them with closure and justice.
