Three journalists were injured, one seriously, in an Israeli attack at the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Turkish TRT journalist Sami Shehadeh had his foot amputated in the attack, which the media office in Gaza and Reporters Without Borders say appears to have been deliberate. Shehadeh was wearing press gear when the strike hit, leaving him injured despite being surrounded by people and journalists.
Gaza’s media office condemned the attack as part of a pattern of Israeli forces targeting journalists to intimidate them and prevent them from reporting the truth. Reporters Without Borders noted that attacks on journalists in Gaza have become disturbingly common in recent months, with over 100 journalists killed. The organization called for an end to the violence and urged the international community to pressure Israel to stop the attacks.
Turkish officials also condemned the attack, with President Erdogan vowing to stand firm against Israel’s actions. At least 70 injured people were brought to a local hospital following the attack in Nuseirat camp, which has seen ongoing violence since the war began in October.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones and the need for protection for those reporting on such events. The international community, human rights organizations, and media outlets continue to call for an end to violence against journalists and civilians in Gaza.
