Colorado inmate Ronald Caillier escapes hospital, poses extreme danger

Ronald Caillier, a 38-year-old inmate from Wyoming, escaped from a Colorado hospital after overpowering a deputy and a security guard. He was being held on local charges of burglary and assault at the time of his escape. The Otero County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert, warning the public that Caillier is considered armed and extremely dangerous, and advised against confronting him if spotted. Law enforcement officers have been using various resources including dog teams, drones, thermal imagers, and trackers in their efforts to find Caillier. He has ties to Colorado Springs, Greeley, and Gillette, Wyoming. The deputy and security guard involved in the escape were treated for injuries and released.

Caillier escaped in a stolen 2007 White Dodge Grand Caravan with a Colorado license plate BFMW09. The van has a full tank of gas and a 9mm gun under the driver’s seat, along with some damage that includes a dent on the passenger side and a cracked passenger side rear-view mirror, making it easier to identify. This escape is one of several that have occurred across the country in recent months, with inmates escaping in North Carolina, Louisiana, Idaho, and most recently, Colorado. Billy Lee Smith and Leon Ruffin are among the other inmates who have made successful escapes but were later apprehended by law enforcement.
