Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville, Tenn., known as the ‘Strip’ near the University of Tennessee, is undergoing a major transformation with the construction of new apartments. The traditional hangout spot for students is now seeing an influx of housing developments, raising concerns among students like Ian Tulk and Pete Bunch.
Tulk mentioned the need for a balance between business opportunities and focusing on academics due to the growing student population. On the other hand, Bunch expressed concerns about increased traffic and parking issues as more apartments are being built. However, he also acknowledged the potential for easier parking on-campus once these constructions are completed.
The new development on the Strip includes the ‘Hub on Campus’ by Core Space, set to house more than 1,600 people with luxurious amenities like a rooftop pool, hot tub, hot yoga room, and dry sauna. Despite these modern upgrades, students like Tulk and Bunch worry that the construction of these apartments will take away the unique character and fun atmosphere of the Strip, making it look more like a city than a popular hangout spot.
With the construction now more than halfway done, Cumberland Avenue is set to see a substantial transformation by fall 2025. While the new apartments will bring changes to the traditional landscape, they are also expected to offer convenience and comfort to students at the University of Tennessee amidst the growing demand for housing on and around campus.
