Former Vice President Glas’ Arrest Deemed Illegal by Ecuadorian Tribunal | Court Update

Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas’ defence team has celebrated a recent decision declaring his arrest inside Mexico’s embassy in Quito unlawful. The ruling, issued by a three-member tribunal, deemed the detention as illegal and arbitrary, leading to global support for Glas’ case. While the decision acknowledged the wrongful arrest, it upheld his ongoing imprisonment due to his prior convictions on corruption charges.

Glas, a member of the left-wing political party Citizen Revolution, had sought refuge inside the Mexican embassy following his convictions in 2017 and 2020. However, on April 5, Ecuadorian police stormed the embassy and arrested him, sparking tensions between Mexico and Ecuador.

The tribunal’s decision has been met with mixed reactions, with Glas’ legal team vowing to appeal until his release is secured. The ruling highlighted the violation of international law regarding the inviolability of embassies, but it also pointed out that Glas’ prior convictions justified his imprisonment.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Glas’ supporters have continued to protest for his release, showcasing widespread solidarity for the former vice president. As the case continues to unfold, tensions between Mexico and Ecuador persist, with Mexico filing a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the embassy raid.

The ruling represents a significant step in Glas’ legal battle, shedding light on the complexities of international law and diplomatic immunity. While the decision to uphold his imprisonment is a setback, it has galvanized support for his cause, ensuring that the fight for justice continues.
