A recent bill passed in Tennessee will soon make it a felony to help a minor across state lines for an abortion if you are not their parent or legal guardian. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Paul Rose, aims to protect parental rights in determining underage pregnancies. However, critics have pointed out that the bill could pose risks for minors in certain situations, such as cases of abuse or incest.
Sen. Heidi Campbell likened the bill to the dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale,” expressing concerns about the limitations it places on individuals. Despite opposition from Democrats who argued that the language of the bill is vague and unconstitutional, Republicans pushed the bill through the Senate.
The bill also prohibits anyone from discussing the possibility of crossing state lines for an abortion with a minor, using language that Democrats argue is intentionally nebulous. Attempts to clarify the bill to exclude contraceptives, allow for the disposal of embryos, and permit close relatives to help minors get an abortion were rejected by Republicans.
In addition to the abortion bill, a similar measure around gender-affirming care was also passed, creating a felony for those who help minors access care out of state. Democrats have criticized the bills as attempts to control people’s lives and regulate conversations, raising concerns about the erosion of personal freedoms in the state.
