LSU pitchers Luke Holman and Griffin Herring put up a strong performance, holding Tennessee to just three runs on five hits, but it wasn’t enough as the Volunteers claimed a 3-1 victory over the Tigers. The loss dropped LSU to 22-14 overall and 3-11 in conference play, while Tennessee improved to 29-6 overall and 9-5 in the SEC.
Holman, who was charged with the loss despite allowing only two runs on two hits in 5.2 innings, impressed with a strong outing. LSU coach Jay Johnson praised Holman’s performance, calling him the best player on the team. Herring worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Tennessee’s starting pitcher Drew Beam earned the win, limiting the Tigers to one unearned run on eight hits. The Vols’ offense was led by Billy Amick, who hit a solo homer in the eighth inning to extend their lead to 3-1.
Despite the loss, LSU showed promise with Michael Braswell III scoring the team’s only run in the second inning. The Tigers will look to bounce back in the series finale on Sunday, which will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and televised on the SEC Network.
LSU will need to overcome the pressure on offense and make adjustments to challenge Tennessee in the final game of the series. With strong pitching performances from Holman and Herring, the Tigers will aim to even the series before heading back home.
