Michael Showers, a seasoned guitar player and owner of a music-themed lounge in downtown Windsor, began a journey on Sunday to walk over 850 kilometers from Detroit to Nashville to raise awareness for mental health. Showers, carrying just a few personal belongings and his guitar, plans to write a song each day while on the road to help someone in need. His wife, Shannon Laprise-Showers, supports his mission, understanding the struggles people face with stress, anxiety, and depression. Showers’ walk was inspired by the challenges his business faced during the pandemic and the understanding of mental health issues. He plans to sleep wherever he can find shelter, even if it means sleeping on the street and playing his guitar for passersby. Laprise-Showers plans to check on him during his journey, despite her worries. Showers hopes to spread a message of kindness and stop online bullying through his walk and social media presence. People can donate to support his walk, dubbed the Peacock Walk, through a provided link. Showers’ determination and commitment to raising awareness for mental health, despite the challenges he may face along the way, serve as inspiration to his family and community.
