University of Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes celebrated a milestone victory as his men’s basketball team dominated Texas A&M, winning 86-51 at the Food City Center. The victory marked Barnes’ 800th win of his career, making him the 15th Division I coach to achieve this feat. The game was highlighted by a stellar performance from guard Dalton Knecht, who scored 24 points, including 15 in the second half.
Barnes humbly credited his success to his players, coaches, administration, family, and faith, emphasizing that it’s not about him but the collective effort of the program. The Volunteers took the lead early and never looked back, leading for over 37 minutes and never trailing by more than 52 seconds. They outscored the Aggies in paint points, fast-break points, and dominated the glass with a 50-33 rebounding advantage.
In addition to Knecht’s impressive performance, Jonas Aidoo recorded a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Tobe Awaka added 12 points. Zakai Zeigler had a standout game with a rare line of nine points, nine rebounds, 14 assists, and zero turnovers. The Volunteers shot 52.4% from the field and held the Aggies to a season-low 27.3% shooting.
The victory marked a series record with the largest margin of victory against Texas A&M. Barnes’ notable accomplishments in his coaching career include being the 15th coach in Division I history to reach 800 wins, as well as the fifth individual with SEC coaching experience to achieve this milestone. The Volunteers will face No. 14 Auburn in their next game, looking to continue their winning streak in the SEC.
